Embrace Adventure: The Ultimate Guide to Elopements in Arkansas

Hey there, adventurous souls! Fall leaves, brisk breezes, and changing seasons has me day dreaming about little sneak away weddings with playful couples and amazing views. Elopements are all the rage these days, and Arkansas offers the perfect backdrop for a stress-free, intimate wedding adventure. I’ve hiked with couples through Canada, and ducked behind waterfalls in Iceland. I’ve wandered cobblestone streets in Guatemala and white beaches in Turks and Caicos but there is something special about an Arkansas elopement. The Ozarks just hit a little different. In this guide, we're going to dive into the top five questions people ask about planning an elopement in Arkansas and share some priceless advice for an unforgettable experience. Let's embark on this adventure together and discover why Arkansas is the ultimate elopement destination (and just maybe why I should be there holding the camera for you).

1. Where Should We Elope in Arkansas?

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art

Start your journey amidst the world-class art and nature at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. This Bentonville gem boasts breathtaking architecture, tranquil ponds, and picturesque trails. Imagine saying your vows beneath the iconic Tulip Tree Overlook, surrounded by the beauty of American art. Sure it may not the be the place you think of first when you think of “microwedding”. We’ve shot enormous weddings with hundreds of guests at this remarkable place but if you remove the noise what is left is absolute magic.

Hawksbill Crag (Whitaker Point)

For those craving a mountaintop experience, Hawksbill Crag is the answer. Perched high in the Ozarks, this natural wonder offers panoramic views that will leave you breathless. It's an ideal spot for adventurous couples who want to exchange vows on the edge of the world. A quick note though Hawksbill can be a little bit crowded and is absolutely at it’s best in the early morning hours. If you’re up for a predawn hike and want to start your day together - this is the place.

Garvan Woodland Gardens

Nestled in Hot Springs, the Garvan Woodland Gardens provide an enchanting setting with botanical wonders at every turn. The Anthony Chapel, located within the gardens, is a stunning glass-walled chapel surrounded by lush greenery—a perfect blend of natural beauty and architectural elegance. It’s the largest of the Arkansas Glass Chapels and a really powerful place to escape to.

Buffalo National River

If a riverfront elopement speaks to your soul, Buffalo National River is the place to be. The serene riverbanks and towering bluffs offer a tranquil escape for an intimate ceremony. Plus, you can celebrate your love with a peaceful float down the river afterward.

White Rock Mountain

For an elopement that feels like a fairy tale, consider White Rock Mountain. This remote location in the Ozarks offers sweeping views and cozy cabins for a romantic getaway. Whether you're exchanging vows at sunrise or sunset, the stunning backdrop will leave you enchanted. It’s my favorite place to watch a sunset and the location for a few of my very favorite shoots I’ve ever been a part of.

2. How Do We Plan a Stress-Free Elopement in Arkansas?

Prioritize the Essentials

Keep it simple. Focus on what matters most to you and your partner. Whether it's an epic view, beautiful vows, or the perfect photograph, make sure your elopement revolves around your core desires and remove the fluff.

Marriage License

Don't forget the paperwork! Make sure to research and obtain your marriage license in advance. The last thing you want is to arrive in Arkansas and realize you can't legally tie the knot.

Professional Photographer

Invest in a professional photographer (like yours truly!) who specializes in elopements. They'll capture the magic and emotion of your day, allowing you to relive it for years to come. Total Shameless plug here, but hey - it’s my blog.

Plan for All Seasons

Arkansas weather can be unpredictable. Be prepared for any scenario, especially if you're eloping in the beautiful but changeable Ozarks. Pack accordingly and have a backup plan if necessary.

3. Can an Elopement Include Guests?

Absolutely! Elopements can be as intimate as just the two of you or include a select group of loved ones. What you might call a "micro wedding" with 25 or so guests is entirely possible. Share your day with those closest to you and let them witness your love amidst the natural beauty of Arkansas.

4. What's the Deal with Arkansas Glass Chapels?

Arkansas is home to some stunning glass chapels that are perfect for elopements. These architectural marvels blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. If you're looking for a unique and memorable venue, consider places like Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs or Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel in Bella Vista. Check this link below for a complete look at all of the chapels, the differences between them, the capacity they can hold, and photos from actual weddings at each!

5. How Can We Ensure an Adventure-Filled Elopement?

Go Off the Beaten Path

Choose a location that's not just beautiful but also adventurous. Explore Arkansas's hiking trails, hidden waterfalls, and remote vistas. An adventurous elopement allows you to connect with nature and each other in a profound way.

Personalize Your Ceremony

Craft vows that reflect your journey together and the adventure ahead. Embrace your personalities and tell your unique love story during the ceremony. Make it an experience that truly belongs to you. PRO-TIP : consider still having a private first dance, a toast, a tiny cake. Just because it’s an elopement doesn’t mean you can’t share in all of the traditional elements of a full size wedding!

Capture the Moment

Hire a photographer who understands the essence of your adventure. Someone who can capture candid moments, the breathtaking views, and the emotions you'll want to remember forever. Don't skimp on photography – it's your ticket to reliving the adventure. (I’m just going to keep plugging this by the way).
